All About Sawfishes

All About Sawfishes is an educational book written by marine biologist Ruth H. Leeney and intended to educate and inspire young readers on these lesser known creatures.

The illustration brief required a naturalistic style and biologically correct representation for individual creatures and ecosystems. (Ruth knew that there were going to be dorks out there that count the number of teeth on the rostrum of each sawfish!)

We chose watercolour to compliment the marine theme. The watercolour blotches throughout the book lend a soft underwater feel, as well as being helpful framing and compositional devices.

The last slider is from the back of the book where each ecosystem is outlined with numbers identifying species in the illustration. These are for educational purposes, but also to colour in!
